Questions
If something is not here, ask in the Discord. A question that gets asked twice ends up on this page.
Getting in
Is The Pub open to play right now?
Not yet. The server is up and worked on daily, and it currently shows in the RedM server list as The Pub - Coming Soon, because that is what it is. The allowlist is on, so an account that has not been approved is turned around at the door.
The opening date is announced in the Discord, and being in the Discord is the whole of being told. The steps to be ready take about half an hour and none of them expires.
What do I need to play?
Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC, the free RedM client, a Discord account and a microphone. Nothing else. There is no console version of RedM, Red Dead Online is not involved, and the game itself is not supplied here.
If any of that is unfamiliar, start with what RedM actually is and then how to install it.
Does it cost anything?
No. Joining is free and there is nothing on this site to buy. Everything a character owns in the world is earned in the world, because buying past a grind would make the grind pointless, and the grind is the server.
What is an allowlist, and how do I get on it?
It means connecting is not enough on its own. You put in a short application in the Discord, a person reads it, and approval is then held against your Discord account. Until it is granted the server will not let you make a character.
The full steps are on Ride In. The application is not a test of prose. It is there so everybody in the world has decided to be there on purpose.
Where is the server hosted, and will the ping be good?
The server runs on a dedicated box in Australia, on the same machine as The Pub's FiveM server. Most large RedM servers sit in North America or Europe, which from here costs a couple of hundred milliseconds on everything you do, and you feel it every time you draw on somebody or reach for a timing window.
New Zealand and South East Asia get a good deal out of an Australian host too. Peak hours are Australian evenings.
How many players does it hold?
The limit is deliberately low while systems are being tested, and it will be raised before the server opens.
It is not going to be a huge server. An economy where shop stock runs out and every bank holds a real balance is more interesting with a few dozen people who know each other than with hundreds who do not.
Is there an age requirement?
A character is between eighteen and eighty years old, and the server enforces that at creation. The requirement for the person playing is set out in the Discord rules rather than here, because it is a house decision and the Discord is where it is kept up to date.
Playing here
Do I need a microphone?
Yes. Voice is proximity based and it is how the server is played. A whisper carries two metres, a normal voice six, a shout fourteen.
You do not need to install anything for it: no TeamSpeak and nothing to configure beyond picking the right microphone in Windows. There are no radios, because it is 1899 and a handheld set is sixty years early.
What happens when I die?
You do not die, you go down: on the ground, able to look around and to talk, and able to do nothing else, for two minutes. A doctor can be called to where you fell and can have you back on your feet in about twenty seconds of the two of you kneeling in the open.
Otherwise the clock runs out and you are offered a bed at the nearest surgery with a small bill and less blood in you than you started with. Half your satchel ends up on the ground where you fell; the rest stays with you. Quitting while you are down achieves nothing, because the clock stops while you are away.
Can other players rob me?
Yes, and they can be hanged for it. Robbery needs a reason and a lead up rather than being a way to open a conversation, and every witnessed crime raises heat that brings lawmen and posts a bounty.
A bounty does not decay. Riding into the wilderness cools your stars but never takes the poster down, which is what gives bounty hunters something to chase weeks later. The rules cover where the line is.
How many characters can I have?
Five slots per account, so the first character does not have to be the one you keep. What one of your characters knows and owns is theirs alone.
Deleting one asks you to type its name back. That is deliberate, and it is the only apology you get for how permanent it is.
I have never roleplayed before. Is that a problem?
No. Nobody here is auditioning. The one thing worth knowing is that you stay in character while you are in the world, and that anything belonging to the person at the keyboard belongs in the Discord.
Walk into a saloon, talk to whoever is at the bar, and pick up a trade. Everything worth doing on this server is easier with one other person, which does most of the work of teaching you how it goes.
How long before I am any good at anything?
You can be useful to somebody inside an evening, because skills move quickly at the bottom of the curve. The top of a skill is a hundred levels away and is meant to be rare.
Grinding one action forty times inside ten minutes drops the gains to a third until the window clears, so the fastest route up is to do the work rather than to farm one node. Nobody is behind for having a job and a life.
Can I stream or record?
Yes. The only rule about it is the one that already applies to everybody: what you saw on somebody else's stream is not something your character knows. Watching a robbery live does not tell your character where the robbers went.
The server itself
What framework does it run?
Its own. Progression, inventory, banking, shops, law, medical, horses, stables, cooking, the HUD, voice and the shared minigame framework were all written for this server rather than bought as a script pack.
That is why the systems read from each other: a meal cooked by a player feeds the mining stamina of the man who eats it, and a shopkeeper's shelf feeds the price the next rider pays. It is also why The Frontier is honest about what is not switched on yet.
Is mining, crafting or farming in the game yet?
Not at the moment. Mining, crafting, farming, deliveries, housing, businesses and distilling are written but switched off while they are finished, and the skills and minigames behind them already exist.
The Frontier lists exactly what is running and what is not, at the bottom of the page under its own heading, rather than folding the two together.
Will my progress be wiped before the server opens?
It might be. The server is still being built and a reset before opening cannot be ruled out honestly. Anything decided is announced in the Discord first.
Play during this period because you want to help shape it, not because you expect to keep the money.
Do I need to download mods?
No. The server sends you what it needs when you connect, the way every RedM server does. Nothing you have installed for story mode matters here, and script hook is switched off server side, so the usual single player menus will not load while you are connected.
I already play The Pub on FiveM. Is this the same server?
Same owner, same Discord, and nothing else in common. The FiveM server is modern day and has been running for years. This one is 1899 and runs an entirely separate framework, database and character list, so playing one gives you no head start in the other.
Both houses are behind the same front door.
Can staff give themselves money or items?
No. The commands that hand out money, set a job or move somebody across the map are gated to the owner's own account, and everybody else is an ordinary player while they are connected. The moderation tools live on a web panel outside the game.
Every movement of money is written to a ledger with a reason attached, which is there to catch duplication bugs and catches favours just as well. More on how that works.
How do I report a player or appeal a decision?
Open a ticket in the Discord with the date, roughly the time, the characters involved, what happened in order, and a clip if you have one. A person reads it and you are told the outcome.
An appeal is another ticket, read by somebody other than whoever made the call wherever that is possible. Losing a fight, losing money or being arrested are not reports; they are the server working.
Still wondering
Then ask. The Discord is where the answers are written before they get here.
